Nurturing Creative Talent: Nomthandazo Tshabalala

Nomthandazo Tshabalala is an aspiring jewellery designer and multidisciplinary creative from Diepkloof, Soweto, Johannesburg. A natural creative at heart, her work is rooted in self-expression, individuality, and storytelling through design.  Her artistic journey began at the National School of the Arts, where she majored in violin and piano, developing a deep appreciation for discipline, craftsmanship, and creative expression – values that continue to inform her approach to jewellery design today. After matriculating, Nomthandazo pursued studies in Theology and Religion at the University of Pretoria, an experience that broadened her understanding of culture, meaning, and the human spirit. Although she was unable to complete the degree due to financial constraints, the redirection proved pivotal. She is currently completing a Diploma in Jewellery Design and Manufacturing at the University of Johannesburg, while also running a small handmade jewellery business focused on resin and polymer clay. Inspired by the women around her who celebrated individuality, Nomthandazo creates one-of-a-kind pieces designed to tell personal stories.  Her long-term vision is to grow as a skilled jewellery designer and artist, collaborate within the industry, and explore metal sculpting and unconventional forms of creation – continuously pushing creative boundaries and building a future rooted in innovation and authenticity. CPM proudly sponsored Nomthandazo’s first year of studies at the University of Johannesburg and is honoured to support such a dedicated, passionate jewellery design student and creative.

The Risk Report: Industry Safety in Focus

The Risk Report: Staying One Step Ahead of Crime in the Jewellery Industry Crime remains a real and ongoing concern in the jewellery industry, making awareness, preparedness, and collaboration more important than ever. The Jewellery Council Risk Initiative (JCRI) plays a key role in supporting jewellers by sharing timely information, encouraging preventative measures, and strengthening relationships between the industry and law enforcement. Originally established in 2012/13, the JCRI has grown into a trusted platform where jewellers can learn from incidents, share intelligence, and respond more effectively to criminal activity. From 2026, the initiative will be managed fully in-house by the Jewellery Council, allowing resources to be directed more efficiently toward targeted, industry-specific crime prevention. The initiative continues to be guided by a multi-stakeholder committee including law enforcement, private security, insurers, and industry representatives. Encouraging progress has been seen over the past year. Improved CCTV quality has contributed to successful arrests and prosecutions, theft cases are being treated more seriously within the criminal justice system, and crime has declined in areas where bail was denied. The SAPS Safer Festive Season Campaign has also once again reinforced the importance of vigilance, particularly in smaller malls and shopping centres. This monthly column will focus on practical, actionable guidance to help jewellers strengthen security, respond effectively to incidents, and protect staff, customers, and assets. Topics will include sharing intelligence, documenting incidents correctly, leveraging technology, and learning from successful prosecutions. By working together, sharing experiences, and staying informed, the jewellery industry can build a safer, more resilient environment for everyone. Call to Action:All security-related incidents, whether successful or attempted, should be reported to the Jewellery Council of South Africa at admin@jewellery.org.za. Please include details such as the date, time and location, a description of the incident, suspect or vehicle information, CCTV footage or images, and the SAPS case number where applicable.

Stop Discounting — Start Selling Value

In the world of jewellery sales, it’s tempting to believe that lowering prices is the quickest way to close a deal. When a client hesitates, offering a discount can feel like an easy win. But in reality, every unnecessary discount chips away at more than just profit — it reduces the perceived value of what you offer. 1. Discounts Devalue Your Expertise Clients don’t just buy jewellery; they buy trust, craftsmanship, and confidence. When you discount too easily, you send a message that your product — or your expertise — isn’t worth its full price. Remember, you represent a brand built on quality and artistry, not on bargain hunting. 2. Confidence Builds Value The most successful salespeople know how to stand by their price. Speak with conviction about the craftsmanship, materials, and service behind every item. When you believe in the worth of your product, your client will too. 3. Discounts Can Become Expectations Once a customer gets a discount, they’ll often expect one every time. Instead of training clients to wait for “a deal,” train them to value what they’re getting — durability, design, and professional service that can’t be matched. 4. Offer Value, Not Discounts Instead of lowering the price, add value. Offer advice on care, packaging upgrades, or a follow-up service. These small touches make clients feel special while keeping the full sale intact. 5. Protect the Brand, Protect Your Worth Every discount erodes brand prestige. When you hold firm, you protect not just today’s sale but the brand’s reputation for excellence — and your own standing as a trusted professional.

Key Jewellery Trends for Spring 2025

As the seasons shift, so do our favourite jewellery styles. Spring 2025 is bringing fresh bursts of colour, expressive textures, and bold statement pieces that embody the vibrancy of the season. Whether you’re designing in your workshop or curating a new collection, these key trends offer endless inspiration. Pastels & Vibrant Accents Colour is taking centre stage this spring, blending soft pastels with bold, unexpected contrasts. Shades like blush pink, lilac, and baby blue are being paired with striking pops of yellow and turquoise. Enamel accents, resin details, and vividly coloured gemstones are essential elements bringing this trend to life, adding a playful yet sophisticated touch to jewellery pieces. Textured Metals Jewellery with depth and dimension is a must-have this season. Hammered, brushed, and high-polish contrasts create intriguing surfaces, giving each piece a unique, tactile quality. Layered chains, fluid metal forms, and organic textures enhance the artistic aspect of jewellery design, perfectly blending raw craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics. Modern Pearls Pearls are getting a bold, contemporary update. No longer confined to traditional styles, irregular baroque pearls are making a statement, offering individuality and uniqueness to each piece. Whether set in modern geometric designs or mixed with unconventional metals, pearls now exude a fresh and edgy appeal, making them a key component of forward-thinking jewellery collections. Statement Earrings & Mismatched Pairs Big, bold, and beautifully asymmetrical—statement earrings are an essential trend this season. Oversized hoops, sculptural drop earrings, and intentionally mismatched pairs invite designers to experiment with proportion and movement. Acrylic and wirework keep these striking designs lightweight and wearable, making them perfect for everyday style with a dramatic edge. Spring 2025 is all about personal expression and creative exploration. Whether you’re embracing vibrant colours, experimenting with textures, or redefining classic elements, this season is the perfect opportunity to push your designs in exciting new directions.
