Jewellery stores across South Africa are once again being targeted by criminals, making it more important than ever for retailers to prioritise safety. The Jewellery Council of South Africa (JCSA) has shared key security guidelines to help store owners and staff protect their businesses, employees, and customers.
Practical Security Measures for Retailers
- Stay Connected to Crime Prevention Initiatives
Work closely with shopping centre management and security teams, and remain actively involved in all crime prevention initiatives. - Invest in Quality CCTV
Ensure entrance cameras are positioned at eye level and provide clear, high-quality footage to capture identifying details. - Vet and Train Staff Regularly
Security personnel and employees should be thoroughly vetted and, where necessary, polygraphed. All staff must also be trained to remain vigilant. - Have Emergency Contacts Handy
Make sure emergency contact numbers are easily accessible to all employees in case of an incident. - Secure Entrances
Install security gates and appropriate access controls at store entrances. - Strengthen Alarm Systems
Equip your store with smoke alarms and panic systems linked to centre management, security, and armed response where appropriate. - Control Access
Do not allow individuals into the store before opening or after business hours. Always open and close the store with at least two staff members, while a third observes from a safe distance. - Monitor and Report Suspicious Behaviour
Staff should be alert at all times, reporting any suspicious behaviour and sharing photos with shopping centres and other retailers where necessary. - Protect High-Value Items
Distribute high-value items across cabinets to reduce losses and store them in a safe after trading hours. - Respond Safely During Incidents
In the event of a crime, comply with the perpetrator’s instructions, avoid confrontation, and focus on making mental notes to provide useful information to SAPS.
Building a Safer Jewellery Trade
By implementing these measures, jewellers can reduce their risk and ensure greater safety for both staff and customers. Security requires vigilance, preparation, and strong collaboration with shopping centre management and law enforcement.
