JCSA LAUNCH TECHNICAL SKILLS CERTIFICATE

Professional Technical Skills Certificate

Dear Manufacturing Members

The Executive Committee of the JMASA is pleased to announce the launch of a Professional Technical Skills Certificate, the aim of which is to recognise the skills acquired by employees in the workplace.

We acknowledge that so much informal training takes place in the workplace and this ‘Certificate’ gives formal recognition and benefits both the employee and the employer.

To most people the title and description of the qualification won’t matter, but to the person that only knows that one job, this is important as it gives him a sense of achievement and pride to have this qualification.

JMASA has developed the following Technical Skills qualifications to date:

  • Bench Technician
  • CAD Technician
  • Indian Jewellery Bench Technician (still to be finalised)
  • Jewellery Casting Technician
  • Refining Technician
  • Surface finishing Technician
  • Production Setter Technician

Employers – ONLY MEMBERS – will now be able to measure from the qualifications developed by the JMASA, whether their staff have the relevant knowledge and skills to make them eligible for the certificate.

The concept is as follows: Assume a person works as a Wax Technician, for example, at Employer A, to such a level that Employer A will recognise her skills by means of issuing her the Professional Technical Skills Certificate, in association with the Jewellery Council.  It is therefore understandable that Employer B will be satisfied to employ her with her skills, given that Employer A is a member of the Council and has a good reputation in the industry.

PROCESS

  1. Obtain specific technical skills document from Jewellery Council which outlines what an employee is required to know in that specific skill.
  2. Once the employer is confident that the employee is able to meet all criteria set out in the above skills qualifications, he is able to apply to the JMASA Executive Committee by completing an application form, which will be tabled and approved by the Committee.
  3. Once approved, the Jewellery Council will issue a Certificate to be signed by the Council and employer. The employer’s details will appear on the Certificate.

Members who are interested in applying for the above are requested to contact Bavina Vassan at the Council’s office who will send the application form as well as the technical skills assessment forms which will be utilised to score employees. Her email address is bavinav@jewellery.org.za and tel: 011 484-5528. You are also welcome to contact me to discuss.

This process has been developed to cut out red tape and relies on honesty, ethics and good reputation of our members.

The cost will be R150 + VAT to the Council to cover consumables.
