CPM’s first priority has always been to support the well-being of our people.
From the get-go we’ve been specialists in the recycling of precious-metal-bearing scrap, so we understand the responsibilities associated with recovering silver, gold, platinum and palladium from the robust materials they’re typically manufactured into.
Every precaution is taken to protect our staff from the hazards inherent within the chemical and thermal reduction processes involved in precious metal refining, as well as their by-products.
All our facilities operate under the authority of an integrated health, safety and environmental management system. Dedicated personnel oversee the maintenance of environmental controls that ensure the effective neutralisation or capture of harmful gasses and particulate, and all four of our branches are manned by a Health & Safety committee with several representatives.
The ongoing training of our dedicated H&S officers is responsive to the evolving requirements of the macro-environment (including global events like the Covid pandemic) as well as to the technological upgrades of our own manufacturing and recovery processes, which facilitate maximum returns for the client, and support our commitment to reducing the impact on the environment.
To this end, the following everyday heroes from our Cape Town office recently completed their First Aid and Health & Safety certifications:
Dylan Johnson, Neill Knipe and Bennie Van Niekerk – First Aid Level 3 | Dolly Nofemele and Bridgette Makatesi – First Aid Level 2.
Sinethemba Ntlangana and Zimkhitha Makatesi – First Aid Level 1 | Cami Eades CPM’s Finance & HR Manager, presents Neill Knipe, Sinethemba Ntlangana and Neville Knipe with their Health & Safety Representative’s certificates.
In addition to the above new qualification-holders, the numerous safety-focussed positions that we have filled across our company include the below, all bolstered by annual refresher and on-going training courses. In Cape Town alone, we have 42 health and safety-related posts filled!
- Fire prevention officers
- Fire Marshalls
- First Aiders
- Equipment Supervisors
- Hazardous substance co-ordinators
- Incident Investigators
- Compliance officers
The responsibility to fully protect our personnel, clients, suppliers, as well as the environment is not one we carry lightly. Our H&S policy undergoes regular review in order to support continuous improvement and to remain more than compliant with local rules and regulations including the Occupational Health and Safety Act, as well as our voluntary and significant investment in Responsible Jewellery Council certification.
Our track record of zero significant incidents of workplace injuries (and absolutely no injuries due to unsafe practice in the workplace) reflects the importance placed on the safety of our team, and the excellent standards that are upheld by all.
Huge congratulations to our latest qualification holders, as well as to every member of the CPM family who create this caring and cohesive culture, in which looking out for each other’s well-being is done both intentionally and instinctively. We are so proud of you all!
