For Mandela Day 2018, while CPM Gauteng representatives visited NQ Jewellery in Soweto, our Head Office staff took to the icy streets of Cape Town to spread a little cheer in the winter gloom. We have supported Street Sleeper for the past few years, and wholeheartedly believe in the work they’re doing to improve the lives of the homeless in our Mother City.
The registered non-profit creates survival sleeping bags which provide a basic yet welcome barrier from the rain and wind. They are made from upcycled billboard PVC, adding the obvious environmental benefit of diverting large amounts of waste from landfills, and creating a durable product that provides immediate relief. The organisation also provides training and employment opportunities to those in the community who are able to learn the skills necessary to manufacture the bags. Donors are encouraged to gift these to their homeless neighbours in person, thereby building a bridge across the social divide by simply engaging more meaningfully with each other.
This year CPM once again sponsored 50 bags over the winter/Mandela Day period. We are proud and thankful that our staff members and suppliers have taken it into their hearts to embrace this cause and we encourage everyone to support Street Sleeper in any way possible.
More information about Street Sleeper can be found on their website www.streetsleeper.org
CPM staff members Columbus and Sinethemba distributed bags in the Montague Gardens area, and one of our suppliers Lynne Pietersen took to the streets of Somerset West with blankets as well.
